Steve Cohen challenged Mets fans to come to the park in 2025 after lamenting the previous season’s attendance numbers, and in the team’s first home series of the season, the fans responded.
Citi Field saw an average attendance of over 40,000 fans in the Mets’ three-game sweep of the Blue Jays, a total of 121,771 fans overall. That mark is a record for the stadium in the team’s opening home series.
There was plenty of intrigue to bring fans to Queens over the weekend, from Juan Soto’s highly-anticipated first game in Queens as a Met to Pete Alonso’s first time back since re-signing with the team. Plus, fans got a look at Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who many hoped could be a target next winter (though Guerrero signed a massive extension with the Blue Jays shortly after the series ended).
Cohen has spent record money on the Mets roster, including the record $765 million contract that he gave to Soto, and he called on fans to return the favor by filling the park in 2025. Cohen pointed to the Mets being ranked 18th in attendance last season, in a year where New York made a playoff run and were one of the best teams in baseball in the second half.
So far, the attendance figures to take a noticeable spike in 2025, if the weekend showing was any indication.
