Francisco Alvarez to undergo surgery for torn ligament in thumb

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed after Saturday's game against the Dodgers that catching phenom Francisco Alvarez suffered a torn ligament in his thumb, and will undergo surgery next week.

Alvarez had been placed on the 15-day IL with a thumb sprain before Saturday's game after injuring it while running the bases in Los Angeles.

"We don't know the timetable for his recovery," Mendoza said. "But we're pretty confident we will get him back this year."

Alvarez's loss is a big blow for the surging Mets, as the 22-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit 25 home runs in 123 games. He is hitting .236 with a home run so far this season.
