Francisco Lindor gave Jeff McNeil some solid motivation to keep swinging a hot bat.
The middle infield duo that got into it in the tunnel behind the Mets dugout in an altercation that led to last year's infamous rat-raccoon incident, were buddied up in the visitor's clubhouse after Thursday's thrilling comeback win over the Phillies, where Lindor, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, told McNeil he would buy him a car if he won the National League batting title.
McNeil is certainly looking locked in at the plate, batting .348 over 98 plate appearances, looking much more like his 2019 All-Star self rather than the player who struggled to find his swing throughout the 2021 campaign, finishing with a slash line of .251/.319/.360.
Lindor's .318 batting average in 2019 was the highest of his career in seasons where he logged at least 250 plate appearances (he hit .329 as a rookie in 2018, when he had 248 plate appearances in 63 games). It will be hard to keep up his current pace, but if he does, .348 would put him in good position to take home the title, and get a shiny new car from his double play partner.
But, as Puma chronicled, once he alerted Lindor that he recorded his promise to McNeil, Lindor replied, "I didn't say what kind of car."
