Boomer says Francisco Lindor contract has 'bust written all over it'

Francisco Lindor continues to struggle, and Boomer is getting closer to ruling the shortstop’s massive contract as a major miss by Steve Cohen and company, who signed Lindor to the extension prior to the start of last season.

“He’s already committed $341 million to Francisco Lindor, and that, for the last two years, this has b-u-s-t written all over it,” Boomer said during Wednesday’s show, after Lindor went 1-for-7 in Tuesday’s doubleheader to drop his season OPS to .709.

Lindor got off to a hot start this season, and many assumed his rough debut season in New York was behind him, but over the past month, he has struggled badly at the plate, putting up similar numbers to what he had in 2021, when he was booed by the home fans in a debut campaign to forget.

Lindor is in just the second year of his big 10-year contract, but Boomer is already worried that Lindor could be trending towards a bust, though he still wouldn’t rule out the four-time All-Star returning to form at some point this summer.

“There’s a lot of baseball left to be played,” Boomer said. “The warmer weather is coming, maybe he’ll play better under those circumstances, maybe he’ll have a June or July to remember.

“He’s having an off month and the team is still winning.”

The Mets are indeed winning, comfortably in first place in the NL East, but if they want to take it a step further and be seen as the team to beat in the National League, Gio says either Lindor has to start hitting like a superstar again, or the team will have to seek outside reinforcements.

“It’s a problem,” Gio said. “They’re gonna have to beef up the bullpen and fund a bat at the trade deadline…if they’re gonna be serious about competing in the National League.”
