Thursday night was a particularly special one for Francisco Lindor, who, along with the rest of his teammates, wore the No. 21 on Robert Clemente Day to honor the Puerto Rican legend.
Lindor, who typically wears No. 12 as an inverse of Clemente's number (his father wore No. 21 to honor Clemente), made the night even more special when he ripped a no-doubt two-run home run to help get the Mets back on track and put him alone atop the single-season home run leaders by a shortstop in franchise history.
Still, Lindor is chasing a feat a little more special.
"A lot of great shortstops played here," Lindor said. "My hats off to them. Appreciate them setting a high bar, but I don't play for those records. It's great, it's a blessing and an honor to be in elite company, but I play the game to win and I want to win. We're doing that right now.
"I think it would mean a lot more to win the World Series than to be the all-time leading shortstop in home runs."
Lindor is having arguably the best season of his career, eclipsing his previous career high in RBI with the help of Thursday's home run, which surpassed Asdrubal Cabrera as the top home run hitting shortstop in Mets history over the course of a single season.
Still, Lindor wants to be the Mets shortstop to hoist a World Series trophy more than he wants to hold any franchise record.
"It's cool, but I want to win a World Series," Lindor said. "That's how I want to be remembered."
