As the Mets prepare for the 2024 season, many already have their sights set on 2025, as big-name free agents potentially await after a season that won't carry high expectations for New York after a relatively quiet winter.
According to ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney, the Mets also already have an eye on next offseason, with big goals in mind.
Per Olney, the Mets "fully intend to take a run" at Juan Soto next offseason, as the new Yankee star is expected to be a free agent, and one that could set contract records. The Yankees acquired Soto this offseason in a blockbuster deal with the Padres, and Soto has deferred to his agent, Scott Boras, when asked about potential extension talks with the Yanks.
As of now, it seems like Soto will play out his contract year and test the free agency waters. That could change, but if it doesn't, the Mets and Yanks could find themselves in a bidding war against one another for Soto's services.
