Mets have been in contact with J.D. Martinez: Report

Many assumed the Mets were done with their relatively quiet offseason, but according to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the team may be in line to make one late splash.

Per Puma, the Mets have been in contact with designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who remains a free agent after a third straight All-Star season. The 36-year-old posted an .893 OPS with the Dodgers last season while clubbing 33 home runs, the most he has posted in a season since he hit 36 in 2019.

Martinez would fill a clear need for the Mets, who need another big bat in their lineup to handle the bulk of the DH duties. Since the DH arrived in the National League, New York has struggled to find consistent production at the position, most recently failing with the likes of Darin Ruf and Daniel Vogelbach after Robinson Cano didn't pan out.
