As the Mets pivot from their Yoshinobu Yamamoto chase, the New York Post reports that David Stearns and company are eyeing two bats to potentially boost their lineup.
According to Jon Heyman of The Post, the Mets have an eye on designated hitter J.D. Martinez, which would fill an obvious need for New York offensively, as the DH spot proved to be a gaping hole last season, largely due to the extended struggles of Daniel Vogelbach.
Mark Sanchez of The Post adds that the Mets have “expressed interest” in Gio Urshela, a former Yankee and free agent that would fill another clear need at third base in the wake of Ronny Mauricio’s ACL tear.
Martinez, 36, was an All-Star in 2023 for the fifth straight season, while hitting his most home runs (33) since 2019. He hit .273 with an .893 OPS, more than 100 points higher than his 2022 campaign.
Urshela, 32, was limited to just 62 games in 2023 due to hip surgery, and hit .299 with two home runs and a .703 OPS in that span. The season prior, he hit 13 home runs and batted .285 in 144 games with the Twins.
