The Mets have landed their new president of baseball operations, according to multiple reports.
David Stearns, long considered Steve Cohen's coveted target to lead his baseball operations, has been hired. He will begin the job at the end of the regular season.
Stearns' contract with the Brewers will expire at the end of this season, and had been allowed to speak with other teams since Aug. 1. The Astros were seen as a potential landing spot for the Milwaukee advisor, due to his wife's Houston roots, but Stearns ultimately lands in his own native area of New York.
Stearns is seen as one of the strongest analytical and baseball strategists in the game, and coupling his prowess with Cohen's financial resources could be a home run hire for the Mets.
New York is in the midst of one of their most disappointing seasons in franchise history, as their record payroll was mainly sold off at the trade deadline, leading to multiple front office firings. Stearns will now get to make his own hires alongside GM Billy Eppler, who is expected to serve right beneath Stearns.
