Pete Alonso rode through the Mets dugout on a horse with no name.
More accurately, the plush horse rode on the first baseman's shoulder as he galloped from one end of the dugout to the other, celebrating his second home run of the night during Friday's 3-0 win over the Blue Jays.
Meet New York's Home Run Horse, the team's new long face of the long ball, proudly presented to whomever goes deep, which has been a lot of Mets since the All-Star break, particularly Alonso.
"The home run horse is finally here in the second half," Alonso said. "The horse was in the dugout and I hit two homers. We'll see, but I think it's working so far."
The idea of the horse was brought about by hitting coach Hugh Quattlebaum, and the Mets have clearly embraced it. After Alonso's second blast of the night, James McCann placed the unnamed horse on Alonso's shoulder, and the slugger took it for a ride across the dugout in a new homer celebration. The Red Sox ride a laundry cart, the Padres wear a giant gold chain, and the Mets carry a plush horse still looking for a name.
"It's the home run horse," Alonso said. "I don't know if we have a name for it yet. I'm just gonna call it the home run horse. I honestly have no idea what we're gonna name it just yet. But I'm open to suggestions. Fans, do your thing. Let's hear some suggestions. Something witty and funny."
The horse doesn't have a name just yet, but it certainly has a purpose. If the horse makes an appearance in the Mets dugout, you know things are going well.
"I freaked out one time when I looked at the end of the dugout in the middle of the game," manager Luis Rojas said. I was completely unaware that was happening. But these guys have fun. They do different things. I shouldn't be surprised, but I kind of was when I saw it."
