The Mets could find themselves in need of multiple starting pitchers this winter, as Jacob deGrom has left for the Rangers while the futures of Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker remain unknown.
So, New York has reportedly gotten to work on potential replacements, targeting high-end free agents like Justin Verlander and Carlos Rodon, but they also reportedly have interest in a former Yankee.
According to Jon Heyman, the Mets are among “many” teams that are “in” on Jameson Taillon, who figures to get a nice payday given the current landscape of the pitching market, one that saw the 34-year-old deGrom get a five-year deal worth $185 million. Taillon is obviously not on the same plane as deGrom, but he posted a respectable 3.91 ERA in 177.1 innings last season, and was dominant in the first half of the year while putting himself among the best in baseball in limiting walks.
Taillon pitched to a 4.08 ERA in two seasons with the Yankees, throwing 321.2 innings in that span, a notable achievement after undergoing two Tommy John surgeries. So that injury risk appears to be behind the 31-year-old.
The Rangers are also reportedly in on Taillon, as Texas continues to be aggressive after their spending spree of last winter provided little in terms of wins in 2022.
