Jacob deGrom return could lead to contract offer 'above what Mets consider rational': Report

There are plenty of questions surrounding Jacob deGrom in regards to his Mets future, both in the short and long term.

First, there is the question of when the New York ace will make his first start of the season as he recovers from a stress reaction in his right scapula. Then, there is the question if the righty will be in a Mets uniform beyond this season, as he is expected to opt out of his deal and become a free agent.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported on Tuesday that the rival Braves could make a push for deGrom, but what would a contract look like for a 34-year-old who is the best in the business when healthy, but has struggled to stay healthy since the start of last season?

Apparently, if he returns this season and shows what he showed in his first rehab start, deGrom could still get a big contract.

SNY's Andy Martino reports that some around the league believe if deGrom returns and "is still throwing 100 mph," another team could offer a contract "above what the Mets consider rational." That would be bold considering Steve Cohen's recent spending habits, but even he could be reluctant to offer a mega deal to deGrom, who would be entering his age 35 season and have plenty of recent injury history attached to his resume.

Of course, Cohen can outbid anybody, but the question would be if he's willing to do so. First, the question must be answered of deGrom pitching this season.
