Jacob deGrom turned up the heat in the first inning against the Padres' best bats in Saturday's must-win game two.
With the season on the line, the Mets ace looked the part to start, touching 100 mph on seven of his 12 pitches in the inning, which included strikeouts of Juan Soto and Manny Machado.
DeGrom carved up Soto, sending him tumbling to the ground on a swing and miss off a 101 mph heater on the inner half, then painted the outside corner with back-to-back 102 mph fastballs, both resulting in a swing and miss, to retire the perennial All-Star.
DeGrom struggled in recent starts, but he came out looking like his peak dominant self in the biggest game of the season.
