Jacob deGrom served up three home runs in Friday night's loss to the Braves, but he still turned in a quality start, allowing three runs over six innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.
Turns out, the Mets ace was battling a blood blister and a cut cuticle, leading to the decision to take him out in favor of Tylor Megill after six innings of work.
"Yeah, I had it a little bit last start and then it popped," deGrom explained. "The skin underneath my nail kind of peeled off. Started getting pretty aggravated, and we debated whether or not to keep going with it. We decided that was enough, and didn't want it to become a bigger issue than what it is."
DeGrom's blister may have played a part in his uncharacteristic outing against the A's in his last start, as he allowed a bad offense to score five runs in four innings of work. Still, he wasn't making excuses after losing the biggest game of the season, and takes the blame for New York's defeat.
"The goal is to go out there and put up zeroes and I guess I wasn't able to do it," deGrom said. "That's on me."
