Boomer says it would be 'insulting' to Mets if Jacob deGrom opts out: 'The guy can't stay on the field'

Jacob deGrom threw a live batting practice session on Wednesday, and could be moving closer to a return, but given his recent injury history since the start of last season, it will be hard to have 100 percent confidence that the Mets ace won't face another issue down the road.

Because of that, Boomer believes it would be "insulting" if deGrom opts out of his deal, as he is expected to, and hits the open market.

"If Jacob deGrom opts out of his contract thinking he's gonna get a big, new contract after this, a much as I admire him and like him, that's also insulting," Boomer said. "The guy can't stay on the field."

DeGrom would be walking away from the final year of his deal, worth $30.5 million, and banking on a team to believe that he could stay healthy and put up the historic numbers he was boasting before injuries derailed last season, and so far, this year as well.

Boomer isn't so sure deGrom will even come back this season.

"I've never seen anything like it," Boomer said. "It's unbelievable how brittle he has become."
