Jacob deGrom shoved in his first rehab start, but even manager Buck Showalter admitted that the team would have liked for their ace to ease off the gas pedal in terms of his velocity, as he was consistently hitting triple digits for St. Lucie.
Brandon Tierney understands the team wanting deGrom to slow down the speed as he works his way back from a stress reaction in his right scapula, and says it's "reckless" of deGrom to already be hitting those kind of numbers in what was his first rehab start, especially after this same narrative played out in spring training, when the righty came back pumping gas after missing the second half of the season with injury.
"It temporarily eased the fear of all Mets fans because he hadn't pitched since the prior July," Tierney said during Tuesday's show. "Well, he hasn't pitched since March 27. This is common sense to me. He isn't 24, he's 24. He hasn't been a pillar of health, he's been injury prone for a while. Why is he doing this?
"To me, it's reckless. I'm sorry. It's not smart."
