It took four months longer than expected, but the Mets are finally about to see their two aces pitch in back-to-back games.
After Max Scherzer took the bump in a Mets win on Monday night, Jacob deGrom is set to make his long-awaited season debut on Tuesday, giving New York fans a glimpse of the epic 1-2 punch in the starting rotation that was dreamed of when the Mets splurged for Scherzer before the lockout.
But deGrom's injury has sidelined him for the entire season so far, and on Tuesday, he will toe the rubber for the first time on a big-league mound in over a year.
"We're all excited," Scherzer said. "We know how good he is. We want him out there pitching for us and seeing him go out there and do what he can do."
Mets fans woke up this morning with a similar excitement, having watched their team rattle off seven straight wins and are just now about to welcome back their best player, and the best pitcher in the game when healthy. If deGrom can avoid injury the rest of the season, he would represent the biggest addition to the team that no trade could match, save for Juan Soto.
"We're all excited to watch him throw," Scherzer said. "We'll all be watching with a big smile on our face."
