The Mets have the largest divisional league in the lead by far, have won five in a row, and no other team in the NL East has a record above the .500 mark.
Still, Boomer and Gio say the team's upcoming stretch could make or break what has so far been a magical season.
"Between tomorrow through the 29th, this is where they need to save their season," Boomer said. "Given their injuries and given what's going on, and Buck's done a great job and they've done a great job beating teams they should beat.
"I'm looking at the next 24 games…to me, this is the money spot. Somewhere along the way in July, both [Jacob] deGrom and Max Scherzer are coming back."
After Wednesday's series finale against the lowly Nationals, New York heads out west to visit the Dodgers, Padres, and Angels, all three teams that are playoff hopeful this season (while the Dodgers are again one of the best teams in the league). There are also three games against the Brewers and four games against the Astros to finish out the month, a daunting stretch for a team battling injuries but still comfortably in first place.
"If somehow, if you went 14-10 over the next 24, you'd be in good shape," Boomer said. "You just don't want to have a losing record over the next 24. You can't. You have to stay away from the three-game losing streaks."
The Mets are rolling right now, but Gio warns that with this tough stretch coming up, it serves as reminders of recent Mets teams that have stumbled in June and never recovered. The feeling around the team is different with Buck Showalter at the helm, but it still looms as a frightening possibility.
"They're cruising right now, but this is normally the time of season, especially with injuries, that we have seen previous Met teams fall off the face of the earth," Gio said. "June swoon, how many times have we seen it?"
