Kodai Senga spoke with Shohei Ohtani in Seattle during All-Star week festivities, igniting speculation about their relationship being a boon for the Mets in their pursuit of the two-way superstar.
Asked what the two former World Baseball Classic teammates chatted about, Senga smiled and kept his answer brief.
“Secret,” Senga said.
Senga and Ohtani are friendly, and the Mets are seen as a team that could aggressively pursue the 2021 MVP and likely front runner for the award this season. Ohtani, a free agent at the end of the 2023 campaign, will command a record contract, one that Mets owner Steve Cohen likely wouldn’t be outbid for if he set his sights on Ohtani.
As for the Mets players, the recruiting was on during Monday’s festivities.
“I'm going to put this hat on him right now,” Senga laughed, wearing a Mets hat.
“I think it would be a lot of fun, but obviously, we don’t know where I’m gonna be and where he’s gonna be. But if our paths crossed, that would be great.”
Even Pete Alonso gave his recruitment pitch when asked what he would try to sell Ohtani on when it came to playing for the Mets.
“It’s a great city to live in, Citi Field is a really fun place to play, and New York is a great city,” Alonso said. “We have an excellent fanbase, and it’s just an incredible place to play.”
