Max Scherzer was knocked around in his first start back from serving his 10-game suspension, and that was all Craig needed to see to make his assessment of the aging star.
"We've learned a valuable lesson about Max Scherzer: he's a cheater," Craig said. "He's not going to the Hall of Fame. He puts sticky stuff on his hands, and when he can't, he's pedestrian."
Evan didn't comment on the link to sticky stuff, and Scherzer's spin rate wasn't abnormal in any way in the start that he was ejected from after umpires checked his glove and hands, but he is also very low on Scherzer and his 5.56 ERA this season.
"'Pedestrian' is very kind," Evan said. "I would like to say he sucks.
"It all started in Atlanta. Since that game against the Braves, like the first real playoff game against the Braves, and the game against San Diego, and this year, he's been a horrible starting pitcher. Those are just the facts.
"You want to tell me it's sticky stuff, being old, lack of command, here's what I'd tell you: I don't give a rat's ass. All I know is, in his last seven starts dating back to last year, he has almost a 6.00 ERA. That's it. he's a hired gun, and so far, he's failed."
