When he came to the Mets this offseason, Mark Canha surely brought one question: how to pronounce his last name – was it Can-huh, Can-hah, or Can-na? Or is the first syllable pronounced "conn"?
As it turns out, the answer is none of the above.
"It's 'Khan-ya' technically," Canha revealed Sunday night, while mic'ed up during ESPN's Mets-Padres Sunday Night Baseball broadcast. "It's Portuguese, so the NH is like the eñe in Spanish."
Yup, Khan-ya is the right way to say Mark's name, although he's been going by "Can-ah" the same way many may have Anglicized their ethnic last names over the generations.
"We say 'Can-ah' because I'm a fourth generation American at this point. I've never said 'Khan-ya' because it feels a little too proper."
Who knew? Well, anyone who saw this Tweet, maybe:
Now, we just have to remember to properly capitalize (or not) deGrom and figure out whether it's Vogel-bock or Vogel-back…
