Gio furious that Max Scherzer was pulled with perfect game: 'Pitchers today in baseball are so babied'

Max Scherzer was pulled from Monday's start with a perfect game intact and 68 pitches of wear on his right arm, and few were surprised when the Mets starter was pulled in his first game back from the IL.

Gio was among those who weren't surprised, and to him, that's what's wrong with baseball right now.

"Drives me nuts," Gio said. "I can't imagine thinking back to when I was 10, 11, 12 years old, and someone going, 'Twenty years from now, someone is going to be making $43 million a year, he's gonna be pitching a perfect game, have 68 pitches, and is gonna be taken out.

"That's baseball today."

Boomer noted Scherzer's recent activation from the IL, which was due to left side fatigue after a previous IL stint for a strained left oblique, and that caution is important with bigger goals in mind, but for Gio, that caution still takes too much away from the sport.

"I knew he was gonna come out of the game," Gio said. "We all knew. It's not so much a Mets thing or a Scherzer thing, because everybody is doing it.

"I just don't know when it stops...pitchers today in baseball are so babied."
