Max Scherzer had the night off on Tuesday, and he got a few innings off from watching after he was ejected in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Scherzer didn't like the strike zone from home plate umpire Jeremy Riggs, and was yelling from the dugout after a strike call on Dominic Smith, and Riggs gave him the quick hook.
"I'm sure it won't be the last one Max gets this year," manager Buck Showalter said.
"It was a really weird one. I wasn't even sure if he has. His arm moved and he got right behind the plate and called the next pitch. I don't think I've ever seen that before."
Later in the game, Showalter laughed that he and the coaches thought Scherzer was back in the dugout when he heard more barking, but it was fellow starter Chris Bassitt channeling his inner Scherzer.
"Bassitt's kind of learning how to sound like Max," Showalter said. "Because an inning or so later we heard something over here and all three of the coaches went, 'Max isn't supposed to be back in the dugout,' and it was Chris."
Scherzer has been a valuable veteran presence in the dugout in his debut season with the Mets, and indispensable on the mound. With that in mind, Showalter hopes Scherzer can keep himself in check when he doesn't have the night off.
"I don't want him doing it when he's pitching and not being able to continue," Showalter said. "But he felt like something wasn't fair with Dom, and I'm sure he said something Dom wanted to say."
