Joe & Evan unload on Max Scherzer after playoff dud: 'Basically throwing batting practice'

Joe Benigno was ready to unload on the Mets on Saturday morning, and he didn't disappoint.

Venting with Evan Roberts after a 7-1 loss in the Wild Card Series opener on Friday night, Joe didn't waste any time ripping Max Scherzer for his dud on the mound that ended in four home runs and a lot more boos as he trudged to the dugout with his team trailing 7-0.

"Want me to start with the $43 million man who spit the bit?" Joe said. "They pay him $43.3 million, he goes on the IL twice, and then in the two biggest games this year, he spits the bit. He you-know-whats the bed. Are you kidding me? Basically throwing batting practice?"

Scherzer said he isn't pitching hurt despite somewhat recent oblique troubles, but even if he is trying to pitch through something, Joe doesn't want to hear it. It doesn't excuse four home runs allowed to a team that finished in the bottom third in the league in slugging percentage this season.

"I don't want to hear about his oblique, he had a hangnail, I don't want to hear it," Joe said. "If you're hurt, don't pitch."

All Joe knows is that Scherzer's clunker has put the Mets' once magical season on the brink of immediate playoff disaster, and Evan isn't feeling much better about Scherzer at this point, especially after he faltered a week ago in a crucial game against the Braves with the division on the line.

"Here's the bottom line. We said the same thing to Tom Glavine and Pedro Martinez," Evan said. "You can tell me all about what Tom Glavine did with Atlanta in the late 90s. When I think of Tom Glavine, I think of game five against the Cardinals, and I think about game 162 in 2007. And for Max Scherzer, I don't give a rat's ass about what you did elsewhere. We care about what you did here…you have essentially made two playoff starts for this team, and you have sucked in both of them. I'm not a booer, but he deserved to get booed off the mound last night."
