Max Scherzer 'good to go' after throwing 80 pitches in rehab start

Max Scherzer threw 80 pitches in his second rehab start with Double-A Binghamtom on Wednesday night, and Scherzer made it clear afterward that it would also be his last rehab start.

"No," Scherzer said when asked if he would need another rehab outing before returning from his strained oblique.

"Everything felt good, so I'm good to go."

Scherzer pitched 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs. He also struck out eight and issued just one walk in Hartford in what will be his final tune-up before rejoining a New York rotation, and team, that could use a boost.

Currently, the Mets are on their first three-game losing skid of the season, and the lead in the division has shrunk to three games after the Braves won again on Wednesday. Scherzer has had to watch from the dugout for the past six weeks, and hasn't pitched since Atlanta was 7.5 games back of the NL East lead.

"You just gotta be on the bench and talking shop with the guys," Scherzer said of his time off the field. "Be able to still be a part of the team and helping guys out. There's different things that happen in the big leagues every day that you can talk with teammates about different situations…I'm excited to get back with the team now officially and get this going.

"I can't rush back…but we've had great contributions up and down the lineup and on the mound. What David Peterson has been able to do, what Trevor Williams has been able to do, they really held down the fort and really pitched well and gave the ballclub some quality starts. That's why the lead is what it is and not even lower."
