The division-rival Philadelphia Phillies introduced Dave Dombrowski as their president of baseball operations Friday afternoon, and the New York Mets may not be far behind in picking one of their new lead executives.
New owner Steve Cohen has decided that the Mets won't hire a president of baseball operations this offseason, but RADIO.COM MLB Insider Jon Heyman says the team could be closing in on hiring a general manager:
Joel Sherman of The New York Post confirmed the report, saying that these four are indeed the finalists.
Scott is the executive vice president and assistant general manager in Boston, with his job defined as "overseeing the club's Baseball Analytics, Baseball Systems, and Pro Scouting departments." He currently works under Chaim Bloom, and during his decade-and-a-half plus in Boston, Scott has also worked under the aforementioned Dombrowski, Ben Cherington and Theo Epstein, a pretty diverse and accomplished group of executives.
Meanwhile, Porter, is the senior vice president and assistant general manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and has previously held high-ranking positions with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox.
Owens is the assistant general manager/director of player personnel for the Oakland Athletics, and has spent nearly two decades with the organization. When you consider how consistently successful the A's have been with a small budget, it's certainly intriguing to think about what Owens could do in an organization more willing to spend.
Hill is probably the most recognizable name on this list considering he just finished up a stint as president of baseball operations with the Miami Marlins. While Hill and the Marlins parted ways after the 2020 season, the 49-year-old left the team in very good shape. The Marlins made their first postseason appearance since 2003 this past season, and have an army of young pitching in their organization, led by Sixto Sanchez, Sandy Alcantara, Braxton Garrett, Edward Cabrera and Max Meyer.
Whoever is named the general manager will work under team president Sandy Alderson, at least in the interim.
