The Mets offense struggled to get anything going in a disastrous sweep at the hands of the Braves last weekend, and in Friday's playoff opener, managed just one run on a solo shot from Eduardo Escobar.
Scoring runs has been a concern for New York, and Friday's loss only highlighted that issue. But it's one that Brandon Nimmo says shouldn't all be placed at the feet of the Mets hitters.
"Sometimes, they're good pitchers, too," Nimmo said. "We had no problem driving in runs against Washington, so sometimes you gotta look at who you're facing, as well. In the playoffs, I know the Padres made it look easy tonight, but it's not.
"Everybody's trying their best. The pitchers are very in tune with themselves and what they're controlling."
Regardless of the reasoning for the Mets' quiet night at the plate on Friday, and their quiet weekend in Atlanta that put them in this Wild Card spot, it needs to be turned around quickly before Nimmo and company are left answering these questions through the winter.
"Are we frustrated with the loss? Yes, but we know this offense can score runs," Nimmo said. "But seven runs is a lot to overcome in a postseason game, especially in a game when Darvish is feeling his slider and his other pitchers."
