Just when the Mets were getting some key contributors back from the IL, others have started to take their place.
Manager Luis Rojas hopes Marcus Stroman doesn't become the latest entry to that list.
While Jeff McNeil made his return and Michael Conforto following close behind, New York's injury-riddled season continued on Tuesday when Stroman left his start in the second inning due to hip soreness, and while Stroman went through range of motion and strength tests and no imaging tests were immediately scheduled, it's too early to tell if the righty will miss a start or not.
"One of the pitches he landed he felt like he hyperextended it a little bit so he started getting sore," Rojas said. "He wanted to stay, but I think it was wise to come out and be cautious. He could hurt something else by not being as deliberate with your delivery and using your hips."
Stroman's injury comes shortly after the news of lefty Joey Lucchesi needing Tommy John surgery and reliever Robert Gsellman suffering a lat tear. Just when reinforcements were making their way back, another wave has hit the IL, leaving the Mets once again with no choice but to try and push through an unprecedented string of injuries to try and keep their hold on the NL East lead.
"Once again, they're tough," Rojas said. "None of these come easy in the moment, but we can't stop. That's been the approach each time. We talk with the staff and the front office, and plans start unfolding just to keep moving forward."
The Mets are in a familiar position that they wish felt foreign, but plugging holes in roster has become commonplace in 2021. Now, prospect Tyler Megill will come up to start on Wednesday, with Lucchesi likely going to the 60-day IL as the corresponding move. For the Mets, the emergency move likely feels like another day at the office, ones they hope stop coming their way as they try to break out of a swoon that has saw the team lose six of its last eight games.
"It's been a little bit unusual even though you expect some injuries to happen, but I think we've handled it in the best way," Rojas said. "Everyone has handled it in the best way…we're going to keep doing the same thing."
