It looks like Francisco Alvarez won't be on the Mets Opening Day roster, as the top prospect was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday morning.
The hyped catching phenom was considered a candidate to start the season in the majors after getting brief experience in the bigs down the stretch of last season, but the power-hitting backstop logged just three hits in 28 at-bats this spring, recording no home runs and a .301 OPS.
In just 12 at-bats last season, Alvarez hit a home run in 12 at-bats after posting an .825 OPS in 45 games at Triple-A.
With Alvarez getting sent down, the Mets will, perhaps not surprisingly, begin the season with Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido as their top two catchers.
