Pete Alonso and the Mets have reportedly avoided arbitration in record-setting fashion, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.
New York and its homegrown All-Star have agreed on a one-year deal worth $14.5 million, the largest payday ever for a first baseman in arbitration. Alonso will have one year of arbitration eligibility remaining before becoming a free agent after the 2024 season. That is, unless the Mets sign Alonso to a contract extension before that time.
Alonso was the team's top offensive bat in 2022, smashing 40 home runs and batting .271 with a 146 OPS+. He set the MLB rookie home run record in 2019 when he belted 53 bombs, and for his career, has 146 home runs and an .884 OPS across four seasons.
While Alonso set the first baseman arbitration record, it was quickly matched by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. later on Friday evening.
