One New York star is figuring to get a massive payday this winter in Aaron Judge (or earlier in the year if the Yankees sign him to an extension), but what about another Big Apple bopper across town?
Pete Alonso and the Mets settled on a 2022 salary of $7.4 million to avoid an arbitration hearing, and that is looking like a massive bargain at the moment, as the rookie home run record holder has a .913 OPS with 18 home runs while batting .284. Alonso still has years to go before free agency, as he is only in his fourth big-league season, but if New York were to sign him to an extension, how much money would it take?
Pete Hoffman says it would take a big-time payday.
“We’re at that $300 million mark,” Hoff said during the Tiki and Tierney show on Wednesday. “We are.”
Tiki strongly disagreed, noting the arbitration buyout that would happen for the first couple years of that extension, while BT simply said Alonso isn’t worth that amount.
“Pete Alonso is a superstar,” Hoff said. “You’re unrealistically reading Pete Alonso, and what he means to the Mets.”
Alonso likely won’t reach Judge money given his fielding, but Alonso plays for the richest owner in baseball, and is the best bat in the Mets lineup. He may not make $300 million, but he should be due for a nice payday.
