The Mets will begin their search for a new manager, something their homegrown star is reportedly not happy about.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Pete Alonso “took it the hardest” when it was revealed that new team president David Stearns would not be bringing back Buck Showalter for the final year of his contract, and Alonso had to be talked out of taking his “unhappiness” directly to owner Steve Cohen.

Alonso expressed his sadness with the news after Sunday’s season finale against the Phillies, considering Showalter a “Hall of Fame manager.” Showalter guided Alonso and the Mets to 101 wins last season, but the team faltered down the stretch before enduring one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history in 2023.

Cohen, when speaking to reporters on Sunday, said it was Stearns’ “right” to move on from Showalter and bring in his own manager, and Cohen gave him that right.

Stearns talked about the trade rumors surrounding Alonso as he enters his final year before free agency, and said he expects Alonso to be the starting first baseman in 2024.
