Just as the Mets begin to welcome back some valuable contributors, another goes down.

After activating Albert Almora Jr. for game two of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Nationals, with Jeff McNeil expected to follow at the beginning of next week, Joey Lucchesi was put on the 10-day IL with elbow inflammation. The lefty just put together his best outing of the season on Friday night, tossing 5.1 shutout innings, his longest outing as a Met.

After a brutal start to the season, Lucchesi had begun to figure things out, allowing just three earned runs in his last 22.2 innings of work, striking out 24 batters in that span compared to six walks.

It’s another blow to a Mets rotation still waiting for Carlos Carrasco and Noah Syndergaard to make their 2021 debuts, while ace Jacob deGrom still isn’t a certainty to make his next scheduled start on Monday, though he did throw another bullpen on Saturday and reported no issues.
