Mets place Tylor Megill on IL with right biceps inflammation

Tylor Megill has been rock solid for the Mets so far this year filling in for Jacob deGrom in the rotation – but now, the Mets will need someone to fill in for him.

Prior to Sunday's game, the team placed Megill on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Thursday) with right biceps inflammation, and he will undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of any issues in his arm.

Megill lasted just 1 1/3 innings in his last start on Wednesday, allowing eight runs to the Nationals in his worst outing of the year. The righty had been 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in five starts in April, and suffered his first loss on May 4 after allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings to Atlanta.

He threw a season-high 94 pitches in that outing against the Braves, and ended up tossing 54 in the loss to Washington.

To replace Megill on the roster, the Mets selected the contract of RHP Colin Holderman from Triple-A Syracuse, and transferred Trevor May to the 60-day IL to open a 40-man roster spot.

Holderman had a 2.92 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, three saves, and 13 K in 12.1 IP for Syracuse, so he will help a Mets pen that is without May and Sean Reid-Foley, but the team will need to determine who will take Megill's rotation spot starting Monday night against St. Louis.

The top two Triple-A options, David Peterson and Thomas Szapucki, may not be available, as Peterson pitched for Syracuse on Friday and Szapucki was scheduled to start Sunday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, so the Mets could go with a bullpen game led by Trevor Williams, who started one game earlier this season and pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief behind each of Megill's last two outings.
