Starling Marte's first spring training with the Mets has been a challenging one, recovering from an oblique injury while also facing new surroundings in terms of teammates and on the field.
Not only is Marte with a new team, he is learning a new position in right field after spending his entire 10-year career in either left or center. New York has a need in right field with Michael Conforto no longer with the Mets, and it looks more and more like Brandon Nimmo taking center field, and the newly-acquired Mark Canha patrolling left.
So, expect Marte to be in a new position with his new team on Opening Day.
"Right field? Yeah, that's where we're leaning," manager Buck Showalter said on Tuesday. "Fits the best."
Marte was a spectacular outfielder early in his career with the Pirates based on DRS, but he posted a DRS of -4 in center in 2021, while Nimmo greatly improved at the position, posting a +4 DRS in center last season. Nimmo expressed his desire to be the starting center fielder in the offseason, and it appears he will be getting his wish.
