Report: Mets prospect Thomas Szapucki needs season-ending surgery

The Mets' pitching depth continues to dwindle, as another hurler has been lost to injury.

Thomas Szapucki, the team's 10th-ranked prospect who made his MLB debut last month, reportedly needs ulnar nerve transposition surgery, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The surgery would end the lefty's season.

The 25-year-old Toms River, New Jersey native made his first big-league appearance on June 30, tossing 3.2 innings in a mop-up role against the Braves, allowing six runs on seven hits in an eventual 20-2 loss. With Triple-A Syracuse, he had a 4.10 ERA with 41 strikeouts and a bloated 28 walks in 41.2 innings of work. Szapucki was drafted in the fifth round of the 2015 draft and had been called up in June to help with the team's depleted pitching staff, which continues to take hits in the depth department, even over the All-Star break.

Szapucki has dealt with injuries in the past, including Tommy John surgery in 2018, when he was a top-five prospect in New York's system.

Per DiComo, the Mets expect Szapucki to be ready for spring training in 2022.
