The Mets found an improbably way to defy gravity, twice, during a memorable seventh inning in Queens on Monday night.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh while nursing a 2-0 lead, Luis Guillorme dropped a bunt down the third base line to try and move the runner to third, and the slow roller bounced off the edge of the infield grass and appeared to be heading into foul ground, only to reverse course and settle in fair territory as Manny Machado waited for the ball to roll foul, but it never did.
Later in the inning, Tomas Nido hit a swinging bunt in almost exactly the same spot, and this time, it again hit off the edge of the infield grass before stopping with the ball still halfway on the foul line, as teammates howled in laughter from the dugout, in as much disbelief as those watching the game at home that such a weird infield hit could happen twice in one half inning.
After the game, manager Buck Showalter credited the Citi Field groundskeeper for helping the Mets ice the win over the Padres thanks to a pair of friendly rolls along the third base line.
