The Mets were supposed to honor one of their all-time greats this summer, but instead, a ceremony will be held for Tom Seaver on Opening Day of next season.
New York had a statue dedication ceremony planned for Seaver, who passed away last August, slated to happen in July, but due to delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the statue won’t be ready to be unveiled by then, and will now be a new welcoming to Citi Field when the season opens next year.
“We are excited to unveil this one-of-a-kind tribute to Tom, but it has to be right,” Mets president Sandy Alderson said. “Given delays related to the pandemic, the artist asked for additional time to complete."
The original date was on an off day so players, coaches and family of Seaver could attend. The project was announced in 2019, when the team also announced that Citi Field’s address would be changed to 41 Seaver Way. After the statue is unveiled, it will stand near Shea Stadium’s original home run apple outside the stadium.
Seaver, a Hall of Famer, is the franchise’s leader in wins, strikeouts and career ERA.
