Mets put Pete Alonso on IL with hand sprain

The injuries keep coming for the first-place Mets, with Pete Alonso being the latest to be put on the shelf.

The Mets announced Friday that Alonso would be put on the 10-day IL, retroactive to May 19, with a right hand sprain. Alonso was left out of Wednesday's lineup, with manager Luis Rojas saying after the game that it was due to hand and wrist discomfort that may be stemming from a hit by pitch against the Cardinals earlier this month.

"Pete got an MRI, the MRI came back with nothing major…but he does have a sprain in his right hand, which right now is bothering him to swing," Rojas said. "We went ahead and put him on the IL so he can get some treatment there and progress to getting some swings, and making sure nothing is bothering him to do that."

As a result, Brandon Drury was called up from Triple-A and will start at first base on Friday against the Marlins. The former Yankee played 21 games for the Blue Jays last year and hit just .152 with one home run.

"We just got Brandon Drury, a guy who has been a good big league hitter in recent years," Rojas said. "The depth is still helping us."

Alonso has hit six home runs this season while posting a .769 OPS, but since that series against the Cardinals, when the hand injury may have happened, he has just four hits in his last 34 at-bats.

Alonso is now the seventh Mets player from their Opening Day starting lineup to go on the IL, and he wasn't the only casualty on Friday, as reliever Tommy Hunter also was put on the IL with lower back pain.

"It's crazy things happening to us," Rojas said.

The Mets recalled RHP Yennsy Diaz to replace Hunter, and to open a 40-man roster spot for Drury, LHP Daniel Zamora was designated for assignment.
