The Mets have reportedly made a deal with the Cubs, the team that just swept them at Citi Field to send their reeling season to a new low.
According to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, New York has dealt struggling lefty David Peterson to Chicago, parting ways with a pitcher who has been mainly dreadful since being named an All-Star in 2025. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the return for Peterson is minor leaguer Cole Mathis, a 22-year-old former second-round pick who is hitting .272 in the minors this year with 10 home runs and a .981 OPS.
Peterson had been laboring through a brutal stretch of late, pitching to a 6.09 ERA so far this season while allowing 19 runs in his last 19.2 innings. The discussion was growing louder over whether or not Peterson, a pending free agent, was going to lose his spot in the rotation as his struggles mounted, though he is far from the only Mets starter having issues.
As the Mets fall to 12 games below .500 and ship out their first veteran via trade, now the question will become whether or not there are more moves to come. If the team continues on this trajectory in the coming weeks, a fire sale could be likely.
Has the Mets fire sale begun, or are they simply cutting ties with a struggling pitcher?
