Scott Boras spoke with reporters at the GM meetings on Wednesday, and his trademark metaphors were out in full force when he spoke about his big-name clients from the Mets.
Starting with Brandon Nimmo, to which Boras likened the outfielder to a popular fish.
“There are a lot of teams that are in the waters for a center fielder,” Boras said. “Whoever...Pixar...guy...will be the lucky one to Finding Nimmo.”
Taijuan Walker? He was likened to a literal island.
“Taijuan Walker, he too, he’s one of the few players that’s under 30 and he’s had multiple 150-inning seasons,” Boras said. “So essentially, Taijuan is on an island, and the only question is, who is willing Taipei?”
How about Michael Conforto, who missed all of last season after injuring his shoulder during a workout in front of potential teams?
“He's kind of the return to the ‘Mike,’ the hit of free agency,” Boras said. “Every club knows that much like Rodón, they can get a guy to come there and give them a couple years... and re-assert himself into the market.”
As for the Mets as a whole, Boras did put aside the metaphors to say that after the team locked down Max Scherzer last offseason, players can now see Queens as a desirable destination in free agency.
“When Steve Cohen reached out and signed Max Scherzer, he really raised the flag that ‘we're here to be a championship-level organization,’” Boras said. “The influence of Max on the team, their intensity, the pitching staff, the audience. I think it brought really credible illustration to what the new Met organization is about. That had not been there for a long time. There had not been a marquee to Citi Field.”
