Mets scratch Kodai Senga from spring start, will have testing on finger

The Mets scratched Kodai Senga from Saturday's start with what the team described as "discomfort at the base of his right index finger."

Per the team's announcement, Senga will undergo further testing, and John Curtiss will start in his place.

The move is seen as precautionary, but obviously raises some concern after New York already lost Jose Quintana with a ribs injury. The Mets reportedly plan to use a six-man rotation at times this season to help protect its aging starters like Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Carlos Carrasco, but the staff would need to be healthy enough to have the arms necessary to deploy such a tactic.

Senga, 30, is the youngest arm in the Mets' rotation. He signed a five-year, $75 million contract this past offseason, but had an "iffy" physical, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, though that reported issue was with his elbow. He has made one spring start so far, allowing one run on one hit through two innings of work.
