The Mets have not enjoyed nearly the level of success they had expected so far this season, and neither has their former ace.
Jacob deGrom, who hasn't pitched since the end of April for the Rangers after signing a five-year deal, has been transferred to the 60-day IL with elbow inflammation.
With that in mind, Boomer and Gio say the Mets can at least take solace in the fact that they at least made the right move in letting deGrom go.
"They got that one right, at least in the short term, they did," Boomer said. "The Mets said 'We'd rather take a short-term approach with older pitchers than a five-year approach with an older pitcher who has a history of having all these anomalies and injuries going on.' they took the short-term approach with Scherzer and Verlander instead of signing Jacob deGrom and going through this over and over again. They seemed to have gotten that one right.
"It's not our problem anymore. It's Texas' problem. Let them worry about it."
Gio says he was in no way hoping for deGrom's constant injury woes to continue once he got to Texas, but the fact that they did persist shows that Steve Cohen and company were right to pivot to Justin Verlander.
"The fact that Jacob deGrom signed that massive deal and the Mets passed on him, he goes to the Rangers and goes to the 60-day IL and it's June, it's really just par for the course for him," Gio said. "I don't want to be rooting against him, but I'm sorry, it kind of feels like validation in a way."
