Boomer: Mets should shop Pete Alonso if they are out of it at trade deadline again

As the Mets begin their offseason moves, Boomer and Gio wonder what is in store for Pete Alonso, who will be entering his final year before free agency.

Both want Alonso in Queens long term, but playing devil's advocate, Gio says there is an argument to avoid signing the homegrown slugger to a long-term deal.

"If he has a year like Aaron Judge did, or anywhere close, there will be other suitors out there," Gio said. "You're gonna have to pay him a ton of money for a long time, for a guy who is 30 years old. We've seen those contracts not work out in the past many times."

Boomer wants Alonso on a long-term deal, but if the Mets are once again out of it by the trade deadline in 2024, he would understand making a blockbuster trade to say goodbye to their best hitter.

"You still have a tradeable asset if your team is out of it at the trade deadline. How much would Pete bring in return at that point?" Boomer said.

"As a Met fan sitting here right now, I want Pete Alonso to be my first baseman for the next eight years. In the middle of the season, if we are going the other way, then I want to do exactly what you're supposed to. You trade your most tradeable asset and bring back as many assets as you possibly can. I don't want to go down the road the Islanders did with John Tavares."

Gio agrees that the return would be substantial for Alonso, and if the Mets were out of it by the deadline, it would be easier for the team to justify trading him.

"You would think it would be significant," Gio said. "If he's having another big years and the Mets and David Stearns says 'we have to go in a different direction,' then you think the return would be significant."
