Gary Sanchez is heading back to New York.
The former hyped Yankees phenom has reportedly signed a minor-league deal with the Mets, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, in hopes of resurrecting his MLB career after badly struggling over the last four seasons.
For the Mets, Sanchez provides some catching depth at a position where Omar Narvaez remains on the IL, Tomas Nido has given next to nothing offensively, and Francisco Alvarez is still looking to take off.
Sanchez hit just .205 with 16 home runs in 471 plate appearances with the Twins last season, after the Yanks traded him to Minnesota for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Josh Donaldson, and Ben Rortvedt. A two-time All-Star with the Yankees, Sanchez's production fell off dramatically after 2017, as he underwent numerous defensive overhauls and labored through prolonged offensive slumps.
Sanchez is still just 30 years old.
