Mets' Starling Marte day-to-day with fractured middle finger

Prior to Wednesday's doubleheader in Pittsburgh, Mets manager Buck Showalter was optimistic that the team had avoided the worst with outfielder Starling Marte, who left Tuesday's game after being hit on the right hand in his first and only plate appearance.

Unfortunately, the team announced during Game 2 that a CT scan revealed a partial non-displaced fracture of his right middle finger, and he is considered day-to-day.

"He is just sore, which is always a concern, so we're waiting with bated breath that things come back clean," Showalter said Wednesday morning. "So far, so good, but he went for more imaging because the doctor last night didn't want to completely sign off on it, and wanted to get a little clearer image."

Marte is hitting .292 with 16 homers and 63 RBI in 118 games this season, two shy of what he played last season between Miami and Oakland, but this is the fourth different ailment he has missed time with this season; he dealt with groin inflammation right around the All-Star Game, and missed a few games in June thanks to both left quad tightness and a wrist contusion suffered when hit by a pitch.

The Mets are thin in the outfield without Marte, as Tyler Naquin – who was 3-for-33 over his last 18 games entering Wednesday – started in right field and went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Behind him, however, Terrance Gore is the only true outfielder on the bench, although Jeff McNeil can play either corner in a pinch.
