Starling Marte just got back from the bereavement list after losing his beloved grandmother, who raised him since he was nine years old.
On Saturday, in his first at-bat back in action, Marte hit a home run, and pointed to the sky as he crossed home plate.
It was an emotional moment for Marte, who hit a no-doubt home run on the first pitch he saw. He pointed to the sky and looked to the heavens as he crossed first base when the ball cleared the left field wall, and again when he finished his trip around the bases.
Marte’s grandmother, Ponga Brigida, raised Marte in the Dominican Republic after Marte’s mother passed away. Brigida passed away unexpectedly on the anniversary of Marte’s death.
Safe to say Saturday’s home run will be dedicated to Brigida’s memory.
