The Mets were completely washed out this past weekend due to heavy rain in the New York area, and Steve Cohen has reportedly looked into a way to make rainouts at Citi Field a thing of the past.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Cohen pondered putting a retractable roof on Citi Field, a project that he found would cost $800 million. With that hefty price tag in mind, even the free-spending Cohen found it to be a very difficult investment to justify.
Per Heyman, Cohen is now considering a retractable roof “a missed opportunity,” as having one installed when Citi Field was being constructed would have been significantly cheaper.
Heyman also reported that the Wilpons considered a retractable roof when plans for Citi Field were being made, and it would have been roughly $125 million. That wasn’t followed through, and the Mets now deal with rainouts like this past weekend, where two games were postponed, and one was called after five innings, a 4-0 Braves win.
