Taijuan Walker was hopeful that his shoulder irritation wasn't anything serious, but he is headed to the IL nonetheless.
The team announced on Tuesday afternoon that the righty has been placed on the IL due to right shoulder bursitis after leaving Monday's start early due to shoulder issues.
Walker had pitched two perfect innings, ending with a strikeout of Didi Gregorius, before having to exit and be replaced by David Peterson.
Peterson threw four strong innings in relief on Monday, and will likely take Walker's spot in a Mets rotation that is already missing Jacob deGrom, who has been replaced by Tylor Megill. Walker had a separate injury scare in spring training after experiencing discomfort in his surgically repaired knee.
Walker wasn't the only Mets pitcher to leave Monday's game, as Trevor May exited after an inning of work with what he described as a "dead arm," something he has struggled with regularly during his career early in a season. An MRI revealed a low grade triceps strain, and the reliever will not be joining Walker on the IL. He will rest for a couple of days.
