The Mets have traded catcher Ali Sanchez to the Cardinals for cash considerations, the team announced on Friday afternoon.
Sanchez, 24, was DFA'd earlier in the week to make room on the 40-man roster for outfield prospect Khalil Lee, who was brought in via the three-team trade with the Royals and Red Sox that saw outfielder Andrew Benintendi dealt to Kansas City.
Sanchez saw limited time at the major league level with the Mets in 2020, recording just 10 plate appearances in five games. He did record a hit during that time, his first as a big leaguer. He has slashed .259/.317/.331 over his career in the minors.
With the offseason signing of James McCann and Tomas Nido as the likely backup behind the plate, Sanchez was likely a long shot to see any playing time in New York this season.
